An industrial visit was organized on 22nd October, 2016 to Allied Strips Ltd, Bahaduragrh, a steel plant specialized in cold rolling of Steel sheets to desirable thickness and size. The basic Raw material in the form of hot rolled steel sheet in form of rolls weighing nearly 20 Tons each in procured from Jindal steel, Tata Steel, Essar Steel etc. These hot rolled sheets are purchased by ASL and then cleaned by dipping in HCl (Hydrochloric Acid) Acid tanks. Then it is washed and dried. These strips are then rolled at room temperature in roller to bring down thickness to 1mm or even 0.2mm as desired by the customer. After rolling, Annealing (Heat Treatment process) is done to refine the micro crystals or grains in steel sheet. The sheets are then slit by a slitting machine to desired width of 500mm to 10mm, as desired by customers and then cut to desired length by cutting machines. The vice president of ASL addressed the students and informed that they can do internship at ASL, for which the names may be forwarded to him through T & P at MERI College and then he will do selection from among applicants.
Students of B.Tech(ME) 5th Semester had visited Merino Laminates on 15th October, 2016 (10AM to 12:30PM). Students were exposed to the overall manufacturing processes and quality checking of the laminates. Starting from the raw material, a paper (Craft paper and Design paper) sheet has to go through five different stages to be the final product. Initially, it is dipped into a chemical named as Melamine Resin to improve the strength of the paper. After that the paper if pressed as per the consumer requirements in five hot presses and then visual inspection is done. After visual inspection, the product is sent to quality control deptt. Where quality is checked and finally, the product is dispatched.
An educational tour for B.Tech (CSE,ECE,ME,CE,EEE) 2nd, 3rd and Final Year students was conducted from 9th October to 13th October, 2016 under the supervision of Dr. Manju Singh, Registrar, MERI-CET, Mr. Himanshu Kaushik, A.P, CSE Dept. and Mr. Gaurav Bhateja, A.P, EEE Dept. The tour started from HMT (Hindustan Machine Tools) at Pinjore. HMT is a machine tool manufacturing company. The student's visited the company. The company representative gave the demonstration/ presentation about their products like watches, tractors, printing machinery, metal forming presses, die casting & plastic processing machinery, CNC systems & bearings. Students got a domain of Knowledge to learn and inspired by the company work culture.Next we move to Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh. The known history of this ancient place hill station tracks the traces of Buddhism since the 8th century. Students enjoyed the Hill station. Then, they visited the HydroPower Plant. We thanks to Prof. Lalit Aggarwal, V.P, MERI-CET and Dr. R.C Goyal, Director, MERI-CET for their unending support and continuously sparing their precious time to provide us the guidance at every stage.
A guided tour of B. Tech.(CE) 2nd,3rd and Final Year students was arranged under the supervision of Mr. Ajay Ruhil, A.P, CE Department on 8th oct.2016.This is an industrial tour to NKG Infrastructure LTD., JD Construction, Sewage Treatment Plant, JHAJJAR. NKG Infrastructure Ltd. The particular site we have visited deals with multistory Residential building on which NKG INFRASTRUCTURE LTD is working. This residential building contains 350 no. of flats and is of six story with a project cost of 150 core. Project is likely to be ready up till January 2018 for use. Our students got a lot of knowledge related to various aspects; some of them are as under: • Column casting and column shuttering • Estimation for steel for a particular column • Architectural design of building • Determination of material requirement • Determination of plaster thickness • Different brick bonds • Foundation pattern for high rise buildings • Effective utilization of manpower JD Constructions The project is of Machine foundation of industrial building .The site work is in progress at Gurgaon road (JHAJJAR). The project deals with Raft foundation with basement below the ground. The very important variation between a normal foundation and foundation construction of this site is of consideration of machine vibrations. Mat foundation with a higher depth is adopted here for greater degree of safety .Proper attempts are made to avoid land sliding and for prevention of moisture seepage from side walls. Columns are of trapezoidal shape without all sides sloping throughout. Here is the list of points discussed at the site through which all the students got a complete knowledge about the site. • Basis divisions of foundation in real • Bar binding schedule of column • Height/ Depth ratio of foundation • Prevention of land sliding • Preparation of high strength concrete Sewage Treatment Plant Sewage treatment plant with treatment capacity of 5 MLD was thoroughly visited by students. Its every working unit was briefly explained by junior engineer of PWD. The brief explanation contains: • Introduction of Media • Grit chamber • Skimming tanks • Primary trickling filters • Aerated tanks • Secondary trickling filters • Sludge removal technique • Sludge thickener beds • Drying beds • Disposal to final drain
A guided tour of B. Tech. 1st year students was conducted on 27th September, 2016, by the following faculty members. 1. Dr. C. M. Singal, Head, EEE Department 2. Ms. PrafullaMinz, ECE Department Twenty one students of B. Tech. First Year were chosen for including in the one-day tour of the National Physical Laboratory, Delhi. During the Tour of NPL, only some of the departments of NPL could be visited, particularly: (A) Atmospheric Sciences/Environmental Sciences Laboratory. (B) Thin Film Solar Cell Laboratory. (C) Carbon Fibre and Composite Laboratory. At Atmospheric Science Laboratory, studies are being done of the air pollutants in the Metropolitan Cities, particularly about: gases like carbon monoxide, nitric oxide, hydrocarbon vapours of unburnt fuels, and suspended particulate matters of micron and sub-micron sizes. At Thin Film Laboratory work is being done on thin films of silicon of p-i-n types, deposited on glass sheets already having a transparent conducting oxide layer of Indium Tin Oxide. The thin films of Silicon are deposited by plasma assisted chemical vapour deposition technique, in a vacuum chamber. The plasma in the chamber is created out of SiH4gas and radio-frequency electric radiation (RF power) . Phosphorus is doped in Silicon film by including a small percentage of PH3 gas in SiH4 gas to make n-type silicon, and Boron is doped in Silicon film by including a small percentage of B2H6gas in SiH4 gas to make p-type silicon. The Thin Film Solar Cell is expected to be of nearly 1 micron thickness as compared to Crystalline Silicon Solar Cell of nearly 300 micron thickness. The cost of thin film solar cells is expected to be much lower than the cost of crystalline silicon solar cells. At the Carbon Fibre and Composite Laboratory, various types of carbon fibres/films/sheets and high density carbons are being developed. These are for applications in aircraft structures to make them light weight, for application in brakes of special types of vehicles, for application in fuel cells for battery powered vehicles for transport, etc. During various discussions , it was informed to us that by contacting the Director NPL or HRD of NPL , our students of B. Tech. can do winter/summer internship at NPL, free of cost, by associating with any of the research groups at NPL. Also employment at NPL is possible for those B. Tech. or M. Tech. graduating students who qualify through the GATE examination with good marks. Further through research work at NPL these students/scientists can earn a Ph. D. degree as well, granted through CSIR Academic Council itself, while being employed at NPL as a research scientist.
